Mexico - Mainland
Just across the Arizona border lies the road to adventure and relaxation, to music and beauty. It’s the road to Mexico, a land rich with culture and packed with fun-filled vacation experiences for the whole family.
Once we cross the border, we take Highway 8 to Puerto Penasco, a tourist-oriented town with lots of American amenities, in addition to the anticipated local fare. Try the local vanilla cappuccino – this seems to be a favorite among frequent visitors to the area.
Highway 37 takes us through some beautiful countryside, ultimately bringing us into Caborca. Caborca is a picture-postcard version of a small Mexican town, and is always welcoming to visitors from across the border. Festivals and civic events are frequent, and the weather is fair and warm most days of the year.
A short jaunt down Highway 2 leads us into Magdalena, which has gained a lot of fame in recent years as one of the premier sportfishing areas in Mexico. Other beachside activities such as windsurfing and jet skiing can be enjoyed thanks to local shops that rent anything we might need to fully enjoy a beachside holiday.
Heading back toward the border via Highway 15 takes us into our final stop of Nogales, a border town with a notorious history as being one of the hideouts of famed bandit Pancho Villa. It’s far more hospitable these days, offering tourists the chance to stroll through historic districts and enjoy shopping at dozens of shops that feature authentic Mexican and Indian artifacts. It’s a prime place to take advantage of the dollar’s strength, that’s for sure!
While we’re in the area, we might want to check out neighboring cities of Guyamas, Hermosillo, or Bahia de Kino, all of which offer excellent chances to enjoy the slower-paced, relaxing lifestyle to be found in this part of the world.
Is it any wonder that more and more people are choosing this region to either build a vacation home, or to retire to? When paradise is so close at hand, it’s the only sensible thing to do!
