North Carolina Camping Off the Beaten Path at The Refuge
The Refuge is a unique North Carolina camping spot located on the south side of Roanoke Island in Manteo, NC. Here you’ll enjoy camping off the beaten path while still being close to civilization. The Refuge has 59 camping spots with full hookups, wifi, picnic tables, and cable TV. Some sites are interior while others are waterfront. Forty four of the camping sites are available for year round leases! The Refuge has a pool, a bathhouse with laundry facilities and an equipped pavilion. Open year round, you’re immersed in the natural beauty of Roanoke Island! There are blackberry bushes, fig trees, grapevines and more and the pond has fish and the canal has crabs! Woodall’s gave four out of five W’s for the facilities and two out of five for the recreation.
While camping at The Refuge, there are plenty of things to do! You can walk along the boardwalks from the campground that lead out along the pond to the canal and enjoy a nice walk or bring along fishing and crabbing supplies! Or spend the day exploring downtown Manteo, shopping and dining or learning about the fishing village’s rich history and culture. Head out on a dolphin cruise or a pirate adventure! Lay out on one of the island’s many beaches or go pier or bridge fishing. Investigate Marshes Lighthouse, or pass time in the North Carolina Aquarium. Head out on a day trip to one of the surrounding islands, like Hatteras Island or Ocracoke Island. There are many beautiful places to enjoy here, making it a great North Carolina camping destination!
